Meadow of Whispers — Creative Direction & Independent Publishing

In my senior year of high school, I independently conceptualized, designed, and published Meadow of Whispers, a floral poetry collection distributed through 10+ retailers including Amazon and Barnes & Noble. The book reached #1 New Amazon AAPI Poetry upon release and has since generated 100+ sales.

Beyond writing, this project became an exercise in creative direction, brand positioning, distribution strategy, and community engagement.

Creative Vision & Design

Meadow of Whispers was not just a manuscript — it was a fully designed aesthetic concept.

I:

  • Designed the original book cover concept and visual direction

  • Structured the internal floral layout and typography

  • Worked with an illustrator to finalize the cover artwork

  • Coordinated professional editing prior to publication

The goal was to create a cohesive visual and emotional identity that matched the tone of the poetry itself.

This experience sharpened my understanding of how visual cohesion reinforces narrative branding.

Independent Publishing & Distribution

Rather than pursuing traditional publishing, I independently managed:

  • Platform distribution across 10+ retailers

  • Listing optimization on Amazon

  • Metadata and category placement strategy

  • Outreach to indie bookstores and libraries

Through direct outreach, I secured placement in stores including Better Read Than Dead and Rainy Day Books.

This phase required proactive relationship-building and positioning the book effectively for independent retailers.

Audience Development & Marketing

To support the launch and ongoing visibility, I built a digital presence under @mochapoetry:

  • 1.2K followers

  • 92K total views

Content centered on:

  • Excerpts from the book

  • Visual poetry layouts

  • Aesthetic branding aligned with the book’s floral identity

This digital layer reinforced brand cohesion and allowed organic audience development.

Community Activation

To extend engagement offline, I organized a book signing event at Nirvana Soul in downtown San Jose.

This involved:

  • Coordinating with the venue

  • Promoting the event

  • Preparing materials

  • Hosting and reading selections

The event drew 80+ attendees and transformed the project from digital distribution into in-person community experience.

Recognition

  • #1 New Amazon AAPI Poetry upon release

  • International distribution

  • 100+ sales

  • Placement in multiple state and national contests

  • Featured in independent bookstores

What This Project Taught Me

Publishing Meadow of Whispers reinforced that:

  • Aesthetic identity strengthens brand memorability

  • Direct outreach can outperform passive visibility

  • Community engagement drives long-term loyalty

  • Messaging and visual cohesion must align

Although creative in nature, this experience strengthened my understanding of positioning, launch strategy, and audience psychology — principles that continue to inform my approach to marketing and growth.
