Researching Generative AI Adoption & Workplace Behavior

Mocha Closet began as a sustainable vintage resale shop on Depop and evolved into a curated personal styling brand. Over time, I combined search optimization, aesthetic positioning, TikTok marketing, and personalized styling systems to grow the shop into a top 5% global seller with 215 sales and $8,533 in revenue.

Market Positioning

From the beginning, Mocha Closet was positioned around:

  • Sustainable vintage fashion

  • “Chic” and cohesive aesthetic styling

  • Trend-aligned but curated presentation

Rather than listing items randomly, I leaned into aesthetic niches — aligning product photography, captions, and tags with trending fashion micro-communities on Depop and TikTok.

This positioning helped the brand stand out in a saturated resale marketplace.

Discoverability & Search Optimization

Depop functions heavily through keyword visibility and algorithm surfacing.

To increase discoverability, I:

  • Researched trending search terms

  • Integrated aesthetic niche keywords into listings

  • Optimized tags and product descriptions

  • Structured catalog organization strategically

These search optimization efforts contributed to over 800K item views.

I learned quickly that visibility is engineered — not accidental.

TikTok as Acquisition Channel

To expand reach beyond platform search, I created a fashion TikTok account (@mochacatz), which reached:

  • 100K+ total views

  • 25.1K likes

Content focused on:

  • Outfit styling

  • Aesthetic mood curation

  • Trend-based fashion transitions

Rather than simply promoting listings, I created content aligned with platform-native trends to build attention and funnel viewers to the shop.

This reinforced how short-form content functions as both branding and conversion strategy.

Evolution Into Personal Styling Bundles

After establishing consistent traction, I expanded Mocha Closet into personalized “style bundles.”

Customers completed a Google Form intake survey detailing:

  • Preferred aesthetics

  • Sizing

  • Color preferences

  • Style inspiration

  • Budget range

Using this intake system, I curated custom outfits tailored to each individual.

Behind the scenes, I:

  • Tracked all orders via Excel

  • Categorized aesthetic types

  • Managed fulfillment timelines

  • Organized packaging into custom shipments

This phase lasted approximately one year and transformed the shop from resale-based to service-driven.

It also shifted the value proposition from product listing to personalization.

Operations & Systems

As order volume increased, structure became essential.

I built:

  • An Excel tracking system for orders and customization variables

  • Inventory categorization methods

  • Fulfillment timelines

  • Repeat customer tracking

This operational layer reinforced that branding and growth require backend discipline.

Results

  • 215 sales

  • 5-star rating

  • $8,533 annual revenue

  • Top 5% Depop seller globally

  • 800K+ item views

These results were achieved without paid advertising — primarily through algorithm optimization, aesthetic positioning, and organic content.

What This Taught Me About Marketing

Mocha Closet taught me:

  • Algorithms reward clarity and niche specificity

  • Personalization increases perceived value

  • Aesthetic cohesion builds brand trust

  • Search visibility and content marketing must work together

  • Backend systems enable creative growth

This project strengthened my interest in roles that blend audience insight, content strategy, and structured growth experimentation.
